La Jornada «Self-harm and suicidal behavior in childhood, adolescence, and youth», held on October 27, 2023, addressed a reality increasingly present in our society.

The meeting focused on self-harm and suicidal behavior as expressions of deep distress during childhood, adolescence, and youth.

The need to legitimize and listen to the suffering of young people was emphasized, preventing these behaviors from continuing to be a taboo subject.

The conference analyzed the character multicausal of self-harm, related to personal, social, economic, and relational factors.

The role of social networks was also reflected upon, as they can act as amplifiers and channels for the dissemination of these behaviors.

From a multidisciplinary perspective, the different forms of manifestation of distress through the body were addressed.

Strategies were shared of prevention, detection and intervention from the family, educational, health, and social fields.

The conference also allowed for reflection on treatment options and the community resources available to support young people.

The goal was to promote a more understanding, coordinated, and non-stigmatizing approach to these situations.

Thus, the meeting contributed to make the distress of young people visible and strengthen the community's capacity to prevent, detect, and address self-harm and suicidal behavior.
