The Jconference on violent extremism in adolescence and youth, held in Barcelona on June 28, 2024, addressed violent radicalization as a highly complex phenomenon that particularly affects adolescents and youth.
The conference focused on the interaction of individual, social, and political factors that can intervene in processes of radicalization.
The meeting gave continuity to the work initiated by the Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation (FCCSM) after the 2017 Barcelona Las Ramblas terrorist attacks.
This work has been developed through a multidisciplinary group with professionals from the educational, judicial, health, and rehabilitation fields.
One of the highlights of the day was the book presentation «Labyrinths of Anger: Violent Extremism in Adolescence and Youth».
The publication compiles the knowledge and reflections arising from the working group «Radicalization processes», developed over more than three years.
The project also had the participation of’Institute of Government and Public Policy of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The conference allowed for the sharing of different professional perspectives on the causes, dynamics, and consequences of radicalization processes.
He also raised the need to deepen the understanding of these phenomena and the strategies for prevention and intervention.
The meeting was ultimately framed as an opportunity to continue thinking about violent extremism and, at the same time, reflect on how to contribute to rebuilding and strengthening the social fabric.
