La Jornada «Basic rights in psychiatric admissions», held on March 18, 2022, was organized by the Healthcare Ethics Committee (CEA) of the FCCSM.
The meeting addressed the conditions and rights of people admitted to mental health services involuntarily.
The main objective was to open a space for debate on current practices and the guarantees that must accompany psychiatric internments.
During the Conference, the document was presented «Basic rights for patients in emergency situations or psychiatric admission», prepared by CEA.
The legal dimension of internments and the normative and protective nature of current legislation were highlighted.
The meeting reaffirmed the need to guarantee respect for the dignity, rights, and voice of the individuals cared for in these situations.
The event featured 230 participants and a broad representation of the different fields related to mental health.
People with lived experience, family members, public network professionals, and specialists from the legal and forensic fields participated.
The interdisciplinary debate made it possible to share perspectives and identify existing challenges in the protection of rights during admissions.
La Jornada thus contributed to promote more rights-protective, respectful, and person-centered mental health care.
