We understand violence not as a natural phenomenon, but as a complex social phenomenon that impacts the processes of subject production, reproducing itself in social and community ties. Any of its expressions produce significant and deep marks on those who suffer it, as well as on relationships, ways of interacting, social organizations, and community bonds.
We find numerous examples in society where “gangs” exert violence on women's bodies and psyches. But it also appears in radicalized groups surrounding gender issues, or in attacks on migrants, especially more vulnerable populations such as children, adolescents, and unaccompanied youth, the growth of far-right groups; violent youth gangs, and also in dynamics of coercive control, related to destructive sects or other abusive group dynamics. And there is no doubt that the closest relationships between the notions we propose to rethink will be found in ideologically radicalized group phenomena that commit terrorist acts.
