The FCCSM, through its Clinical Ethics Committee (CEA), organized the conference «Basic rights in psychiatric admissions», held on March 18, 2022. The conference addressed the fundamental rights of individuals during involuntary psychiatric commitments.
The objective was to reinforce care practices respectful of the rights and dignity of patients. The legal dimension of involuntary admissions and the protection framework established by current legislation were analyzed. The conference took as a reference the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006).
Experts from the clinical and legal fields provided different perspectives on this issue. Particularly sensitive situations, such as emergencies and transfers, were also addressed. Among the presentations, Law 8/2021 on support for persons with disabilities was analyzed.
The update on the rights of people with mental health issues within the framework of the UN was also presented. The CEA presented the document «Basic legal knowledge relating to involuntary psychiatric admissions».
This document outlines the main legal aspects to keep in mind in these processes. The initiative aims to facilitate the effective application of patient rights in clinical practice. It also seeks to offer guidance to professionals and strengthen the trust of patients and their families.
The event featured the collaboration of six professional associations in Catalonia.
The activity received the support of the National Mental Health Pact and the Department of Health of the Government of Catalonia.
