Art is a tool for personal and social transformation. The Xarxart Awards recognize the creative talent of people connected to the public mental health network of Catalonia and share it with all of society.

What are they?

The Xarxart Awards are a visual arts (painting and drawing) competition driven by the Catalan Mental Health Congress Foundation. They are aimed at individuals receiving services from public mental health providers and their objective is to foster creativity, give voice to artistic expression, and break down stigmas.

Art as a tool for empowerment and social transformation

How does it work?

Point by point:

  • Open call: individuals linked to the public mental health network of Catalonia may participate.
  • Categories and awards: each edition awards works of painting and drawing that stand out for their originality and expressiveness.
  • Traveling exhibition: the award-winning and selected works will be exhibited in various municipalities and cultural spaces.
  • Complementary activities: workshops, debates, and talks that connect art, health, and community.

History and Impact

For over 20 years, the Xarxart Awards have been a space for recognition and visibility of art created by people with experience of mental health challenges.

  • More than X editions held.
  • Hundreds of participants and works presented.
  • Exhibitions in numerous municipalities in Catalonia.

With each edition, the award helps to make visible the diversity and creative richness of a group that is often invisible.

Creativity, plastic expression, and mental health

In the context of the 20th Anniversary of the Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation (2000-2020), we are organizing a traveling exhibition of the winning works from Premi Xarxart, convened in each edition of the Catalan Congress of Mental Health (1999-2017).

The Xarxart Award is a painting and drawing competition for people receiving services from the public mental health care network in Catalonia.

The works to be exhibited are the result of the work carried out by different mental health network services, which operate from a community-oriented perspective, accompanying empowerment processes for users. These users have developed creative work through the visual arts, alongside creators from various fields who have been part of the jury for each edition (illustrators, cartoonists, painters, historians, among others).

All of this work and artistic creation can be included within the concept of Art Brut, which aims to incorporate all artistic expression created outside the boundaries of official culture, generally by people with mental health diagnoses or disorders, or by people in situations of exclusion.

The exhibition and other planned awareness activities (talks, debates, etc.) are itinerant, traveling to different municipalities and neighborhoods in the city of Barcelona, in collaboration with various Community Rehabilitation Services, Civic Centers, and/or other interested and involved citizen organizations.

20 Years of Premi Xarxart: A Commitment to Artistic Creation and Mental Health

«És ben sabuda la relació entre l’art, en les seves formes de pintura, escultura, literatura o música, per exemple, i la salut mental.
Mitjançant l’execució artística, persones que tenen dificultats emocionals o problemàtica de salut mental poden trobar formes genuïnes d’expressió que ajuden a canalitzar el seu malestar o sofriment; i es parla llavors d’efectes terapèutics».
