Visions, experiences, and challenges
The eighth edition of the Catalan Congress of Mental Health in Childhood and Adolescence was held in Barcelona on March 14 and 15, 2024. The theme chosen for the occasion was “Community Mental Health in Childhood and Adolescence, visions, experiences, and challenges”It has encouraged us to address this topic by considering the effects of social, cultural, and economic factors on mental health, as well as the importance of involving other stakeholders beyond those directly involved in mental healthcare.
We are aware of the concept of“Hi, community mental health”There is no general consensus regarding its meaning. However, we have started from the definition by Thornicroft and Tansella. According to the author, community mental health is that which incorporates a full range of effective mental health care for a defined population, and which is dedicated to the treatment and support of people suffering from mental disorders, in proportion to their suffering or distress, in collaboration with other local organizations.
The congress has presented an approach that goes beyond the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, and mental health nursing, and has included other professionals such as social workers, monitors, educators, and speech therapists, as well as other networks like education, basic social services, and municipal technical services. All with the objective of articulating different discourses.
The Congress consisted of three roundtables, preceded by an inaugural lecture by Professor Maribel Hombrados, author of the book Manual of Community Psychology. In the first panel, three professionals conversed with Dr. Hombrados about various aspects of community mental health. The second panel focused on different global projects with a community vision, and finally, the third panel focused on community experiences and challenges regarding distress.
The Congress concluded with a closing conference by Montserrat Puig and the awarding of prizes to the three best posters presented.
Upon completion of the Congress, attendees were offered the opportunity to complete an evaluation survey to gauge their satisfaction level and identify both strengths and areas for improvement for future events.
