He has experience in drug addiction, health, and aging. He is a specialist in coaching for health and well-being and in work-life balance. In addition to debuting as president of the Catalan Mental Health Congress Foundation, he is second vice president of the General Council of Psychology of Spain and a member of the International Society for Coaching Psychology. He served as dean of the Official College of Psychology of Catalonia for eight years.

The following provides your perspective on the Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation.

– What are the short- and medium-term goals set by the Foundation's new Board? How do you envision the new phase that is now beginning?

In the short term, it is important to maintain the projects that arose from the last congress, integrate the vision of the child and adolescent sector from the same last congress into this sector, and consolidate relations with administrations through care proposals linked to the community model.

In the medium term, it's crucial to be present in the emerging spaces concerning mental health, engaging all stakeholders. The new phase, with a Foundation as consistent as its history, needs only to revitalize its spirit of advocating for dignified, multidisciplinary mental healthcare that is linked to people's well-being. This healthcare should focus on the main protagonists, addressing the burnout of professionals, and promoting the eradication of the stigma that always surrounds mental health difficulties.

In the long term? How do you envision the Foundation at the end of your term?

I have to make an effort to imagine an end when we've barely started working as a team. But I would like to think that this period we're beginning, which is a continuation of much work done and well done, will lead the Foundation to a respected position in the sector, recognized in society, and so valued by young professionals joining this field that it will transform the average age of its patrons and friends.

– What functions will the new Advisory Council have? When is it expected to be launched?

The main objective of the Advisory Council is to retain the knowledge and experience of relevant individuals who have been part of the Foundation's executive core, or who were part of think tanks or action groups that have concluded their work and currently have time to assist the Foundation's progress without intense involvement in meetings, activities, etc. We could say it is the group of seniors whose expertise and contacts in the professional, social, and political world we cannot afford to lose.

– The Foundation currently has 6 working groups and the Healthcare Ethics Committee, which operate with varying tempos and results. Does the new Board have any proposals to strengthen them or create new ones?

In fact, there will be a handover period between groups concluding their work and groups beginning the preparation for the next congress or congresses. It will be after the summer that we start working in earnest to synchronize projects.
Certainly, regarding the Ethics Committee, we have indeed begun to consider increasing its visibility and also how to engage with various initiatives related to ethics that are active in our country, across the State, and also internationally.

«En l’actualitat gairebé ningú discuteix la importància que tenen els factors socials, econòmics, urbanístics, etc. en l’aparició de malestars i fins i tot de patologies mentals»

How will you address the new Board's proposal to open the Foundation to other professional profiles tangential to mental health care? What strategies will you follow to make the Foundation attractive to these new profiles?

This is a fundamental milestone for the Foundation that in recent years, especially due to the harshness of the crisis, had taken a backseat. Nowadays, hardly anyone disputes the importance that social, economic, urban, and other factors have in the emergence of discomfort and even mental pathologies. Many professionals in these fields, such as architecture, economics, and others, are already working by incorporating mental, psychological, health, and other considerations into their proposals.

Therefore, as an organization, we aim to connect with individuals and organizations who believe in this direction, primarily through cross-cutting conversations and debates. The Foundation has undeniable appeal: it is an open, pluralistic organization, sensitive to the distress of people, whether they are professionals or direct or indirect users of services, especially mental health services.

«La Fundació té un atractiu incontestable: és una organització oberta, plural i sensible al malestar de les persones»

– The most ambitious event organized by the Foundation is precisely the one that gives it its name: the Catalan Congress on Mental Health, which celebrated its sixth edition this year. But this congress takes place every three or four years. Therefore, what will be the Foundation's flagship (scheduled) activities in the coming years?

We will follow tradition in this case: organizing preparatory activities for the upcoming congress, starting with defining the theme, which is not yet fixed at this time. The issue of service continuity based on age and people's problems will likely influence the decision. We will have to wait a bit longer to finalize this matter.

Next November, once again, we will put the network up for debate with the call for a Conference on “Mental Health and Community: what interventions? What models?”. The orientations of all administrations towards community health, technically legitimized more than 30 years ago, should truly preside over public services.

Mental health is surely one of the most deeply rooted social taboos in today's society. Do you think the Foundation can contribute to the fight against stigma, as other entities already do? If so, how?

Indeed, this is a priority task for the Foundation. Normalizing mental health without reducing resources and supporting all professionals operating in the sector. And when I say all, I mean everyone, without excluding professional profiles.

Cooperate on others' initiatives, make statistics public, and favor activities that implicitly normalize mental health. In fact, it requires taking the issue into account at all times, especially, for example, in the media and the design of public policies.

Josep Vilajoana i Celaya és psicòleg coach i psicoterapeuta.
