The fundamental rights of patients during involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The objective of the conference is to analyze the legal dimension of involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations and to highlight the normative and protective nature of the rights afforded by current legislation. Experts from the clinical and legal fields will participate.<\/p>\n

It will be held on March 18th at the headquarters of the Barcelona College of Physicians. It has the collaboration of 6 professional colleges and the support of the National Pact for Mental Health and the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya.<\/p>\n

Barcelona, March 16, 2022.- The Foundation of the Catalan Congress of Mental Health (FCCSM), through its Ethics Committee for Care (CEA), is organizing the conference \u201cBasic Rights in Psychiatric Hospitalizations,\u201d which will take place at the College of Physicians of Barcelona, in person, on March 18th.<\/p>\n

The celebration of this event aims to go beyond a mere code of acceptable conduct and incorporate the necessary elements to ensure a good response in situations of maximum exposure to which patients are subjected (emergencies, transfers, etc.). The objective is to work on\/debate the fundamental rights of patients during involuntary psychiatric stays in accordance with the United Nations Convention signed by the Spanish State in 2006 in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
\nJosep Vilajoana, president of the Catalan Foundation for Mental Health Congress, will inaugurate the conference alongside S\u00edlvia Ventura, president of the Healthcare Ethics Committee, and Joan Vegu\u00e9, director of the Master Plan for Mental Health and Addictions. Afterwards, Fernando Santos, a prosecutor, will present on \u201cLaw 8\/21 for the support of people with disabilities: A norm encouraged by an ethical revolution.\u201d And Alberto Vasquez, former advisor to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on mental health, will address the update of the rights of mentally ill people in the UN convention.<\/p>\n

Presentation of the document \u00abBasic legal knowledge regarding involuntary psychiatric admissions\u00bb<\/strong>
\nSilvia Ventura and Montserrat Hierro, jurists from the Healthcare Ethics Committee (CEA) and specialists in psychiatric admissions and minors, will present the document \u00abBasic Legal Knowledge Regarding Involuntary Psychiatric Admissions\u00bb prepared by the CEA. It is important to highlight the dissemination of key legal points in involuntary psychiatric admissions in order to implement the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (United Nations 2006), which should represent significant progress in clinical practice. In addition to greater confidence for patients and their families, it will serve as a guide to achieve the improvement of patients' rights and the quality of care.<\/p>\n

\nThe Event has the collaboration of: College of Social Educators of Catalonia (CEESC), College of Nurses and Midwives of Barcelona (COIB), Official College of Social Work of Catalonia (TSCAT), College of Physicians of Barcelona (CoMB), Official College of Psychology of Catalonia (COPC), and the College of Occupational Therapists of Catalonia (COTOC).<\/p>\n

With the support of the National Mental Health Pact and the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya.<\/p>\n

The Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation<\/strong> The FCCSM is an interdisciplinary entity that works to improve care and promote mental health through debate and reflection, research, and social awareness, with the participation of citizens, professionals, and other associations. It was created in 2000 with the aim of acting and influencing the promotion and improvement of mental health in Catalonia and of being a broad and plural platform that unites efforts, independently, with all institutions and organizations that share this same interest.<\/p>\n

Established in 2003, the Ethics Committee<\/strong> (CEA) is made up of various professionals in mental health, law, and anthropology. Among its objectives are the review and analysis of legal proposals, the maintenance of continuous reflection on ethical conflicts that may arise in healthcare practices, and taking a stance on proposals for legal reforms at both the state and autonomous community levels.<\/p>\n
