On the 20th anniversary of the Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since the Foundation was established, mental health and addiction care in our country has seen extraordinary progress. It is true that, at least since the 1980s, and especially since integration into the national health system in 1990, the foundations for change had been laid, but it is during this century that the most decisive steps have been taken in committing to the community care model and in significantly improving services and dignifying professionals.<\/p>\n

But, partly due to the complexity of our provider system and, in part, to difficulties in the operational management of the process, this growth has occurred in a heterogeneous manner from the supply side and, in particular, in the underlying care practices. The lack of a shared perspective across the network that understands the health\u2013illness dynamic as a multifactorial issue and positions the person as a subject rather than merely an object of care is a scourge that delays mental health development in the population and impoverishes the health system as a whole. And it is not a question of the existence of differences. We need different perspectives, from various angles of knowledge. And we also need different professional approaches to try to get closer to the person's wholeness. And without forgetting, increasingly evident, the person's own perspective and their active role in the treatment. The answer, then, lies in the ability to synthesize, in wholeness, and in integration.<\/p>\n

Today, the big change lies precisely in the integration of all perspectives and in the centrality of the affected person. A change that will force us to generate and manage relationships based on shared decisions, questioning the old value schemes on which the therapeutic relationship has been based. We need new approaches in the trade-offs we must make between respecting autonomy and the -unrenounceable- goal of avoiding harm and ensuring well-being, always taking into account the principle of justice.<\/p>\n

The Foundation, with which I had the pleasure of collaborating in its early days, clearly represents this position. Opting for interdisciplinarity, working simultaneously institutionally and directly with professionals and their associations, opening the mind to the mental health consequences of the social problems of our time.<\/p>\n

This anniversary falls precisely in the midst of this brutal pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, with which we have learned that, collectively as well, we are vulnerable and interdependent. And that the apparent collision between individual freedom and the collective interest must be analyzed from the perspective of responsibility and solidarity.<\/p>\n

We have a lot of work. And, in addition, mental health problems will increase.<\/p>\n

Congratulations on the journey you've taken and I wish you a great job for the next 20 years!<\/p>\n
